Marshall said the strange concoction was a real-life favorite of hers from a summer she spent at a predominantly Jewish camp, where meals were strictly kosher. If you can believe it, Laverne and Shirley’s famously greasy and hilarious upstairs neighbors, Lenny and Squiggy, played by Michael McKean and David Lander, weren’t originally part of the show. “We were having a good time, [but] we had no idea what was happening.” So, when Garrett bowed out to work on Broadway, the show explained her absence by saying Edna left Frank. A closet songwriter through and through, Garrett lived a fruitful, eventful life to the age of 91 before dying in 2011. In Laverne & Shirley, Squiggy always announced his entry with an emphatic hello!
The blonde one, old Bernice, was drinking bourbon and
water. She was really putting it away, too. The whole three of them kept looking
for movie stars the whole time. They hardly talked―even to each other. Old Marty talked more than the other two. She called his
clarinet a “licorice stick.” Was she corny.

The waiter was very nice, though. He took them back without
charging me. Then I left and started walking over
toward Fifth Avenue. But the trouble was, I couldn’t concentrate.
LENNY AND SQUIGGY’S ORIGINAL ACT WAS NOT FAMILY-FRIENDLY.
They
gave me the wrong book, and I didn’t notice it till I got back to my room. They
gave me Out of Africa, by Isak Dinesen. I thought it was going to stink,
but it didn’t. I’m quite illiterate, but I read a lot. My favorite author is my brother D.B., and my next favorite is Ring Lardner. My
brother gave me a book by Ring Lardner for my birthday, just before I went to
Pencey.
I apologized like a madman, but she wouldn’t accept my apology. Which scared me a little bit, because I was a little
afraid she’d go home and tell her father I called her a pain in the ass. Her
father was one of those big silent bastards, and he wasn’t too crazy about me
anyhow. He once told old Sally I was too goddam noisy.

I decided I’d just
see old Phoebe and sort of say good-by to her and all, and give her back her
Christmas dough, and then I’d start hitchhiking my way out West. I figured I could get a job at a filling station
somewhere, putting gas and oil in people’s cars. I didn’t care what kind of job
it was, though. Just so people didn’t know me and I didn’t know anybody.
They probably thought movie stars always hung
out in the Lavender Room when they came to New York, instead of the Stork Club
or El Morocco and all. Anyway, it took me about a half hour to find out where
they all worked and all in Seattle. They all worked in the same insurance office.
Years later, cast members admitted that such sudden success went to a lot of heads and that a lot of the dissension behind the scenes was ego-related. Marshall had Rothman and Ganz write a 10-minute scene, which was later filmed in Fonzie’s apartment on the Happy Days set immediately after the taping of the “Arnold’s Wedding” episode. In fact, Marshall personally https://hookupgenius.com/aisle-review/ stepped onstage and asked the studio audience to remain in their seats to watch “a scene from a new show” that he hoped they’d like. Paul Sand in Friends & Lovers was a short-lived sitcom that ran from September 1974 to January 1975. Sand played Robert Dreyfuss, a nebbishy musician with the Boston Symphony, and Penny Marshall played his sister-in-law, Janice.
“We sometimes feel he’s not a
terribly good mixer.” All
of a sudden, this lady got on at Trenton and sat down next to me. She stuck the bag right out in the middle of
the aisle, where the conductor and everybody could trip over it. She had these
orchids on, like she’d just been to a big party or something. She was around
forty or forty-five, I guess, but she was very good looking. I don’t mean I’m oversexed or anything like that―although
I am quite sexy.
I didn’t even
feel drunk anymore. Then I took out my door key and opened our door, quiet as
hell. Then, very, very carefully and all, I went inside and closed the door.
Their bumpy old chests are always showing. Old guys’ legs, at
beaches and places, always look so white and unhairy. “I got your note. Thanks a lot.” He’d written me this note
asking me to stop by and say good-by before vacation started, on account of I
wasn’t coming back.
