After Ross and Rachel’s disastrous breakup in Season 3, the pair showed off some extremely toxic behavior toward one another and their friends. In “The One Without the Ski Trip,” Ross and Rachel’s split left all their friends feeling caught in the middle. But instead of trying to find a healthy situation that works for all of them, Ross and Rachel separately invited their buds to hang out, only furthering the pressure in a way that was toxic for everyone involved.
For a good long while on the first season of “Friends,” Ross’ feelings towards Rachel go unnoticed by her. But then in the season finale, “The One Where Rachel Finds Out,” it’s Rachel’s birthday, and Ross has to go to China for a work trip. Before he leaves, though, Ross leaves behind a birthday gift for Rachel, which she is so pleased to open. Once Rachel discovers Ross bought her an expensive vintage pin they saw together ages ago, she is totally blown away by his generosity.

Before Ross and Rachel’s short-lived marriage, Ross makes a quick commitment to Emily Waltham after knowing her for just a few weeks in season five — and Rachel only has herself to blame for them getting together. After all, she was supposed to take Emily, her boss’ niece, out to the opera one night, but dumped her on Ross instead so she could pursue Joshua . Once she finds out they’ve developed a connection, Rachel’s consumed by jealousy, making her previous speech to Ross about wanting each other to move on a complete farce.
But, Ross doesn’t read the entire letter and just tells Rachel what she wants to hear. Rachel finds out that Ross didn’t read the letter and, long story short, they end up in another fight. Friends’ first core romance sparked up again in the beach house for the Season 3 finale and Season 4 premiere, in which Ross was dating Christine Taylor’s sometimes-bald Bonnie. Rachel attempted to smooth things over with Ross via a long and emotional handwritten letter that which, for all the good it might have done, still held Ross up for blame. After initially agreeing to accept the letter’s claims – which he did only because he fell asleep before reading it all – Ross later realized his error and got quite loud about re-defending his stance that they were on a break.
If anything, people love the show even more now than they did back then. There’s a sense of nostalgia with “Friends,” and especially with the beloved main characters on the series. And then on top of all of that, all but accusing her of having an affair with her colleague Mark, because I guess she’s not allowed to make friends in a new workplace.
Despite Ross and Emily’s wedding ending with Emily running away and Ross not being able to get in touch with her, Rachel didn’t immediately tell Ross about her feelings. It was probably for the best, as Ross was understandably stressed out about Emily, considering the two were technically married at that point. In the Season 2 episode “The One With The Prom Video,” a video from Rachel and Monica getting ready for prom together surfaces and the group watches it together. In the video, Ross has already graduated, but when Rachel’s date doesn’t show up on time, he gets ready to escort her to prom so she won’t have to go alone.

I think early Monica would have fared better if she hadn’t been saddled with the problems of later Monica, much as I think later Rachel would have done better in our vote without the limitations of early Rachel. But I must say, I was still impressed to see that Ross received 76 percent of the thousands of votes for Worst Friend that came in. And the moment they are on one, he cheats on her with another girl. And just to make it clear, even if they were on a break it was still cheating!

Fans will remember when Ross dated Julie before finding out about that Rachel had feelings for him in season two. She previously revealed that she first took on the role of Ross’s ex-wife just two days after giving birth to first son Kai. In 2019, a source told Closer Weekly that the couple, said that the couple had never stopped caring for each other and wanted to give their relationship “another shot.”
In the season 2 episode “The One Where Ross Finds Out”, Rachel is on a date with a guy when she confesses to Ross over the phone in a drunken state that she had feelings for him but now she is over him. Ross hears this message the next day at Monica’s apartment with Rachel begging him not to check his messages. Later, in the same episode, they share a passionate kiss at the doors of Central Perk. Later he breaks up with Julie but Rachel decides she does not want to be with him after finding out that he had made a list, on the insistence of Chandler, comparing the good and bad qualities about her and Julie. Touched by this, Rachel kisses Ross on learning this revelation, and the two begin dating.
