After that meeting it’s thought most of Charles and Diana’s courtship took place over the phone. Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s wedding cost an estimated £57 million. A spokesperson for Charles said, “Whatever the prince is providing is a private matter.” They reportedly met again in 1980 at a mutual friend’s party at a country estate, but it wasn’t until the summer of 1981 that their relationship began to blossom. Princess Diana meets former army officer James Hewitt, with whom she had a five year affair. In The Crown, the couple meet for the first time inside Althorph House while Diana is dressed as a tree for a school production. They eventually filed for divorce in 1996 and both continued their royal duties. However, one expert, former royal press scretary Dickie Arbiter, believes Diana and Charles’s marriage started going wrong after William and Harry were born.

“Diana was very protective towards me and wanted to shield me from the attention.” The day of the fatal car accident, Diana was in Paris with her lover, Egyptian billionaire Emad “Dodi” Fayed. After midnight, Diana and Fayed left the Ritz Hotel to travel to Fayed’s private Parisian estate. The bride wore an ivory silk and antique lace gown by David and Elizabeth Emanuel that featured a record-breaking 25-foot train and 10,000 mother of pearl sequins. The couple would go on to share a tumultuous 15 years together, during which they welcomed two sons, Prince William in 1982 and Prince Harry in 1984.
